Our mission...

Who were the voices of freedom that led to American independence, and what were their experiences? How does that notion of freedom compare to other meanins of freedom for different people in different time periods? Our fellowship will take us to Virginia's Historical Triangle. The Historical Triangle, which includes Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, will offer us an opportunity to become the experts for our students. Deep and complete teacher insight, knowledge and understanding that will ultimately be passed to students for their own discovery.

A special thanks to ELS Fund For Teachers Fellowship and Louise Funk and The Public Education Foundation for making this opportunity possible.

The Adventure Begins!

The voices of freedom are not limited to the past, but the present as well.  So, in our first experience in Virginia's Historic Triangle, we visited the Jefferson Restaurant in Williamsburg where we encounterered our first voice in our quest for freedom.  Doreen P. happened to be owner and hostess at the colonial themed restaurant AND a local teacher steeped in the life and times of the colonists.  She shared her local knowledge, better yet from a teacher's perspective, advising us to visit some lesser known historical spots: Jamestowne Island (the first landing), and a plantation horseback tour. She also advised us where to get period costumes-a key for the trunks and student reenactments. The "historic triangle trunks" will contain our documentation, artifacts, and resources that provide the raw materials for our student activities and learning process.

With two days planned for each of the 4 sites, the game plan to start is to explore the first day taking in all that is possible at the site and then determining what is to be seen and done on the next day.

Some other ideas coming up already: the coming together and conflicting of Europeans, Africans, and Indians and how this shaped the notion of freedom for each group.

We are so excited to be here after much planning and anticipation.  We can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring us....
